Piece by Piece: Helping Toddlers Learn Through Purposeful Play
Toddlers are naturally curious as they explore the world around them. Puzzles and problem-solving toys (preferably without screens or batteries) are the perfect toys to help them slow down for more than a second, and engage in critical thinking while using small, focused movements. The following toys help toddlers match shape and size, grow to understand cause and effect and sequence, strengthen coordination, control, spatial awareness, and grip strength.

Cut out the noise. To help your child strengthen their focus, take away external auditory/visual stimuli from the TV or your phone.

In a world where screens and activities rule our schedule, puzzle play helps offer a necessary, alternative to help your toddler slow down and deeply engage. It’s not always about completing the puzzle or “solving” the problem, but giving your toddler space to think on their own and learn in the process. With a few intentional toys, a dedicated environment, and your engaged presence, you’ll help nurture a love of learning that will continue well beyond their toddler years.
