We love reading stories! Since our daughter was little, we’ve made reading together a part of our daily rhythm. Over the years, those shared moments have become treasures—time spent exploring new worlds, asking questions, learning about life, and sometimes just laughing together.

In the fall, we especially love stories that slow us down and help us notice the season around us—the crisp air, the changing leaves, the busy animals preparing for colder days. The books we return to year after year capture that rhythm and beauty, teaching simple truths, building vocabulary, and sparking curiosity.

These seven fall favorites are ones we reach for again and again:

  • Possum’s Harvest Moon by Jan Carr follows Possum as he gathers food and prepares for the season, highlighting the rhythms of nature and community.

  • Fletcher and the Falling Leaves by Julia Rawlinson is a gentle story about friendship and change as Fletcher tries to keep the autumn leaves on his tree.

  • Ox-Cart Man by Donald Hall tells the story of a family harvesting goods and taking them to market, celebrating hard work, gratitude, and the cycles of the seasons.

  • The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson is a clever, rhyming tale of wit and courage that keeps little listeners laughing and engaged.

  • Mother Bruce by Ryan T. Higgins is a hilarious story about a grumpy bear unexpectedly caring for a group of goslings, full of humor and gentle life lessons.

  • Bear Has a Story to Tell by Philip C. Stead is a sweet, playful story about friendship, imagination, and the joy of sharing.

  • Winter in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder captures the cozy, seasonal rhythms of pioneer life, perfect for celebrating the approach of winter.

Each story isn’t just well-written or beautifully illustrated—they help us pause, notice God’s creation, and grow in love for Him together. My hope is that as you read them with your family, they’ll bring the same delight, conversation, and faith-filled moments to your home.
